We are located in a large, cold apartment, the home of an Italian family that we recognize quite well and that embodies some of the stereotypes we like to envision. Stereotypes addressed with great intelligence and theatrical wisdom.
An elderly father, absent-minded, irritable, and very talkative, worried about his nativity scene and his morning coffee. A selfless mother, halfway between the Italian matriarch and a woman consumed by effort and suffering. A brother-in-law who lives with them, single, obsessive, a lottery player, and a bank employee, bitter and continuously angry. A son who still lives with his parents, a son who is already an adult but doesn't want to be. Pampered by his mother, he acts clueless, or maybe he's just a bit slow, and steals whatever he finds. The daughter is a beautiful young woman who was married to an older industrialist, dull, jealous, pedantic, and, of course, very wealthy. There's also a friend of the son, a handsome and shy young man, who has a romantic relationship with the family's daughter, with whom he plans to run away and leave her husband behind.
This entire microcosm reaches its zenith on Christmas Eve and bursts. Everyone gets angry, they shout, reconcile, and deeply love one another.
