Mrs. Carrà, mother of two children and widow of an idealistic republican, refuses to engage in the game of ideologies, even if it means dragging her children into the war, whether on one side or the other. Neutrality becomes increasingly incomprehensible in the midst of civil war; and ultimately becomes impossible.
In 1937, Bertolt Brecht wrote a play that reflects the Spanish conflict, clearly taking the side of the Republican internationalist cause to halt the advance of fascism. The result was a deeply dramatic, non-epic structured work, steeped in realism. Its characters engage in impassioned dialogue, clinging to their convictions, creating a situation that, from pure realism, transports us to where only great works and great characters can take us: a magical and tragic dimension of the most raw and palpable reality.
