Synopsis

Set in the underbelly of Budapest, it shows us how Liliom, a fair charlatan, a bit of a beast, useless and charming, falls in love with Julie, a girl who gives herself to him completely. When she becomes pregnant, Liliom, unable to work, sees no other way out than to rob the man who pays the wages of the workers in a factory.

The robbery, however, turns out to be a disaster, since Liliom and his bad-life friend rob the cashier not when he goes to the factory but when he returns, already without the money. Desperate, Liliom stabs herself with the kitchen knife. But the play does not end with her death, Liliom goes up to heaven, to the suicide section. There they condemn him to return to earth after sixteen years, to meet his daughter.
