La Perla 29 moves for a month to the Teatre de Sarrià to present The Night of the Tribades, the most acclaimed play by Swedish writer Per Olov Enquist, which plunges us into a theatrical rehearsal where everything is about to explode.

Synopsis

In a small theatre, what seems to be an ordinary rehearsal of The Stronger, by August Strindberg, will turn into a harsh and unforgiving battleground between the actresses and the author. The renowned Swedish playwright, hounded by debt and misery, and Siri Von Essen, the leading actress striving to revive her declining career, have long been in divorce proceedings. The outburst of conflicting emotions and dangerous accusations will exceed all limits due to the presence of Marie Carolina David, the production’s second actress and Siri’s current lover, much to Strindberg’s torment. In the midst of all this, a young director will try to halt the unstoppable...

Direction notes

Just before dawn, an entire night unfolds. This night of the tribades must have marked the characters as much as the actors, and us, the spectators… and it has also marked a whole generation of brave people who learned to create, feel and look at a new kind of theatre. A new theatre that was strong, young, rigorous and free.

Staging this text brings a double feeling of challenge and excitement. The challenge is surely familiar to many of you who also come marked by that legendary production that remains engraved in our memories, after the beautiful explosion of the senses that the first Teatre Lliure represented.

The premiere of La nit de les Tríbades by Fabià Puigserver, first in Girona, then at the Lliure in Gràcia, and later revived once again under the direction of Lluís Pasqual. Those legendary names of those actors and directors who changed our lives.

Our production is a tribute to the masters and at the same time a cry of anger, joy and strength, a cry towards an unceasing new future. A strong gaze towards the things we would like to change. An ongoing struggle. Every new generation needs to shake off the pressure and the ways of the previous ones. To shout in order to affirm themselves and to shout in order to change the world, to make themselves heard. An old story, a long shadow, and young actors pushing to transform the ways and the characters. I –we– feel myself in the middle, trying to reconcile the generations, and I am amazed to feel the strength of those younger than me: a new life, a new proposal, the energy of a generation that also wants to shake off what has not yet changed.

Special thanks to Teatre de Sarrià for allowing us to bring our way of making theatre and for welcoming this production into its theatre, as if it were the Dagmar Theatre in Copenhagen. At La Perla 29 we enjoy working in new spaces –new for us!– and working with and transforming walls that we discover, while receiving their warmth and their history. As in any theatre, as in life, we fight against the walls and with them to find new forms and learn how to live with them.

A warm embrace,

Oriol Broggi
