We deeply missed Federico García Lorca. Ten years after the poetic flight of Blood Wedding (2017) and its beautiful tour, we now delve into Lorca’s harshest and most severe play. We present The House of Bernarda Alba, with an immensely powerful cast to bring to life the Drama of Women in the Villages of Spain.
Bernarda Alba imposes the strictest mourning in her household following the death of the family patriarch. She has doors and windows sealed shut, and the women of the house are kept inside, hemmed in by iron bars and thick whitewashed walls. Beneath the silence, a dangerous tension begins to simmer among her five daughters, Angustias, Magdalena, Amelia, Martirio and Adela. La Poncia, who has spent her life in service to the family, senses it all too well. The outside world, with its people and the distant hum of day and night, presses upon the women’s chests like the heavy heat of summer. Out there are men, songs, and the wide, arid fields stretching endlessly. But there are also rumours, and the sensual, taut shadow of the man who will bring ruin to the house. No one and nothing can hold back the deeper forces at play, nor the fierce impulses that drive Bernarda Alba’s home towards an inevitable tragedy of life and death.
